Either way it is time to take a closer look at your relationship and decide whether you want it or not.

• She hasn’t called you for a few days.

This isn’t necessarily a sign that it is over, but if you are use to her calling frequently then there is something wrong.

• Picking fights.

Does she fly off the handle more than usual? Is she causing arguments over stupid little things? This is often a bad case when people are no longer interested in a relationship but they don’t want to be the one to end it. Don’t beat about the bush. Ask him out right if she is no longer interested in the relationship.

• She’s being secretive.

She no longer wants to tell you where she has been or who was on the phone. Maybe the phone is off limits to you. She disappears for hours without an explanation.

• She no longer refers to “we” but “I”.

You use to sit and plan your future together. “We are going to do this, we are going to do that”. Now it is “I am going to do this”. You are no longer included in his future.

• She’d rather spend time with his friends than you.

You have to fight with her friends for her attention. Before you were most important in his life. Now her friends are more important than you.

• You no longer talk.

Once upon a time you would sit and have discussions about everything from the weather to what is happening to the ozone. Now she just answers everything with a “yes”. You no longer have deep discussions.

• Friends start asking what’s wrong.

Friends begin to notice tension or distance between you. They start asking if everything’s “all right”.

• She’s more critical of you.

“That’s a horrible shirt,” he says. Yet she helped you pick it out only a few weeks ago.

Remember that these are only warning signs and, in fact, your relationship may just be going through a rough patch. Talk to each other first before you do anything you may regret.

• Talk about yourself all night - There is nothing worse then a person that loves to talk about himself or herself all the time. Be the one asking the questions!

• Talk about past relationships - Maybe that’s how you lost the last one. Nobody wants to hear you drone on about your ex and what he or she did or didn’t do. Concentrate on your date and see if you can get to the second date.

• Eat with your mouth open - This will not only create a negative impression of you to your date, but also to other people around you.

• Ask too many personal questions - This is your first date and your date may not want to reveal too much about himself/herself just yet. If you like each other and want to continue with the relationship then there will be plenty of time to ask more intimate questions.

• Try to be someone you are not - It’s important to be yourself as you don’t want other people to settle for anything different. Trying to act like someone you are not will only backfire in the future.

• Forget to thank them for the date - It is good manners and etiquette to thank your date for the evening. If you don’t want to go on a date again, this is where you will get your chance to end it. If you do, then this is your chance to ask your date out on another date.

• Propose marriage or kids - Unless you don’t want to see them again.

• Pursue sex; especially after your partner has said no.

• Get drunk - You don’t want to spend half the night in the toilet vomiting and your date won’t think much of you. You can also put yourself at risk of unwanted advances and will not be in the right frame of mind or body to do anything about it.

When preparing for the first date, men and women tend to be focused solely on making a good first impression. As the saying goes, “you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.”

While making a first impression is important, so is knowing how you’ll lock in that second date if everything went well. Making it beyond the first date is a sign that “hey, there may be the potential for something here.” It’s not appropriate for men to leave women hanging, nor is it appropriate for women not to express how they thought the date went… to their date.

Here is some helpful advice on improving your chances at getting a second date:

1. During the first date, show genuine interest in her. You should be asking her more questions than she asks you. You should listen carefully to what she says and respond with follow-up questions. It’s a common belief that men don’t like to listen. Prove that belief wrong with your date and learn to always be genuinely interested in what other people are saying rather than what you plan on saying next.

2. During the first date, focus on positive topics. In general, you shouldn’t discuss politics, religion, or controversial subjects. You should discuss things she’s interested in and keep everything lighthearted. Save the complaining for your buddies.

3. Compliment her. On the date, be sure to compliment her, but don’t go overboard. More than three comments is too excessive. On an episode of Millionaire Matchmaker, one guy was doing great until he told his date no less than 13 times how beautiful she was. That scared her away. Excessive compliments can change someone’s view of you from positive to negative.

4. Be inclusive. If it’s obvious your date and you are having a great time and she mentions an interesting activity (i.e. “One of the funnest things I did was go parasailing once”) then comment on it like “that sounds like fun - we should do it sometimes”. A positive reaction from her to your statement is a sure sign she’s interested in a second date.

5. Don’t leave the woman hanging. If you genuinely enjoyed your first date then tell her at the end of the first date that you’d like to see her again. Contrary to popular male belief, women do not like to be left hanging. If the date didn’t go well then don’t tell her “I’ll call you” when you have no intention of doing so. Women prefer for men to be straight up with them. They will respect you more for it.

By following this advice, a second date - and perhaps many more after that - may be just around the corner.
